Tony Stewart Breaks Leg At Southern Iowa Speedway
Quote
Tony Stewart has had a lot of bad luck recently when he has strapped into his sprinter. Stewart made headlines when he was involved in a serious crash a couple of weeks ago at Canandiqua, and then last week he flipped his sprinter battling for the lead at Ohsweken Speedway. Both incidents he walked away from without injury, however last night Stewart wasn’t so lucky.
Tony Stewart was again battling for the lead at the Front Row Challenge when disaster struck. Our friend Bryan Hulbert with the ASCS explained what happened:
A third caution for a stopped Scott Winters with twelve laps down, set up a restart that saw Phillips leading Shilling, Stewart, Brian Brown and Jason Johnson. Stewart shot by Shilling into second on lap sixteen, and tracked down Phillips.
Stewart took advantage of a Phillips bobble, and shot to the point to complete lap 22. He pulled away from the field at that point and appeared on the road to victory. That came to an end on lap 25, when Josh Higday contacted an infield tire and destroyed his car. Stewart, Phillips and Shilling were unable to avoid the crash.
Stewart got the worst end of the incident, flipping his sprinter. He was taken to the hospital for observation.
This morning news broke that Stewart did infact sustain a broken leg and even had surgery last night. We are unsure at this time how many Sprint Cup events Stewart will miss due to his injuries.
“First and foremost, we’re concerned about Tony and making sure he’s all right,” eventual winner Brian Brown said. “He’s a huge asset to our sport, especially sprint car racing and an icon in the whole motor sports field. Anytime you see him wreck like that and then leave in an ambulance, it’s never good. Hopefully he’s okay. We weren’t going to win that race. We were probably going to run third or fourth.”
“It looked like he got into a lapped car. When I got close, he was flipping cage down. I didn’t really have time to watch and see what was going on.”
We wish a speedy recovery to Stewart! Love him or hate him, he’s a great ambassador for our beloved sport.
now there's a lot of people that are in the pavement/nascar world talking about banning sprint car racing in general, there's no way some one should be able to tell me/others what I can and cant race.
it sucks, but that's part of it
A few days ago tjslideways reported that there has been 2,288 Sprint, Midget, Silver Crown or Super races so far this season, give or take a few. In those 2,200+ races there has been who knows how many crashes. Within those crashes there has been a few unfortunate fatalities and injuries but the percentage is low. Safety has improved tremendously, there will always be freak accidents in any sport. You can have whatever view you want about Sprint Car racing but every driver knows the risk they take when they pull those belts tight. However you should keep in mind that Sprint Car racing is what made Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson and other NASCAR drivers who they are today. They're safer in a Sprint Car than you and I are driving to the grocery store.
