What kind of car?
smoking out the back, or from under the hood?

maybe your radiator fan is shot?

Sounds like it overheated and pushed water. Check the radiator cap. Crank the car and set the AC on high. Watch the fan and see if it is starting and stopping or changing speed as it needs to if it is electric. Watch the temp gauge. It shouldn't go over 210ish by much. If your gauge doesn't have numbers most are designed to run right in the middle.

If you're smoking from the front i would guess it's a leak, somewhere.

Have you checked your lines at all? my guess is it's spilling in and getting burned up.
Your oil is ok? you're not overheating because of it right?

could be 1000 other things too of course, but it seems like a logical place to start.

Stuck thermostat or failing water pump. The pump should have a weep hole on the bottom. If it is dripping slowly it's bad.

Weep hole was my first thought.

Check the lower hose for pinholes too... Basically warm the car up on ramps, crawl under, look at the hose. I had a rock nick in the lower hose on my old Contour that led to an issue like this.

You probably have a leak somewhere, it may be ever so slight.

You can rent a coolant pressure tester kit which would be the fastest way of finding the leak in your system.
