Want to buy something new to screw around with

1998-2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ

or

1998-2001 Dodge ram 1500?

Which is the better option and why?

Wow 600k miles that's insane

There a link In there for a ram with a million miles too lmao

I'm kinda leaning towards a 4.0 jeep with 120k miles for 2500 is that fair?

jeep > ram for reliability under normal driving circumstances. The suspension systems and steering systems are the same design, axles are scaled obviously. I've owned several 4.0 jeeps ranging from 91-99 and three ram trucks, one 89, one 98 and one 99. the 98 was a 1500 gasser and it was a nice truck, but the cost of keeping it going is outrageous. If you do need a vehicle to pull a trailer, the cherokee can be outfitted with stock parts from other years to get you to about a 5000# towing capacity.

My rams -
89 w250 cummins - 638k miles on original engine and 1 trans swap
98 1500 2wd 5.9 gas - 75k miles started losing reverse gear
99 3500 cummins - 199k miles - loved the truck, hated the cost of maintenance
12 1500 quad cab hemi - 15k miles - no complaints yet

My jeeps -
86 2.5l cherokee 2door - 292k miles when the body rusted beyond repair
92 4.0 cherokee 4 door - 309k miles when a combination of body damage and engine wear from offroading caused me to scrap it
93 5.2 grand cherokee - 240k miles when body rusted away beyond repair and transfer case failed
97 4.0 grand cherokee - 199k miles when body damage from offroading (pics in my profile) caused me to move on
91 4.0 cherokee - 310k miles on engine and it is only used as a toy, will be replacing engine soon.

the cummins is a very reliable engine. the 89 was sold with almost 640k documented miles and the guy I sold the truck to scrapped the body and put the engine and transmission into a '52 international. All of my jeeps were abused and never maintained correctly and still lasted a very long time. I do have the 2012 ram now with the hemi just because I needed to build more credit and have a payment. As far as rams go, I will only have this hemi until it is paid off, then I will go back to an older generation diesel. The jeeps however, I will always believe in the 4.0 and they truly are a great vehicle as long as you maintain them and realize they're not made to put your buddies little honda down in a drag race.

I sold my 2012 Patriot because it had no balls whatsoever and parts kept breaking pre 30k miles. (Under warranty, but a pain in the ass)

Brother has an 05 Liberty, sitting in the dealership shop right now for recall on window motors and something with the rear suspension.

I dont care for them.
