Really I want something that is going to be reliable, and cheap on gas.
Looking at civics and such.

But what are the things that I should for sure know about the vehicle before buying?
What certain things should I check?

Look for oil anywhere, particularly around the valve cover.
Test drive it, and pay particular attention to the temp gauge.
If it's automatic and there's a hill nearby, drive up it and feel for any shudder/shake.
Most other stuff should be obvious, even for folks who don't know jack.

My parents have insurance on there vehicle where they can have a mechanic come out and look at a vehicle for $100 and do an on the spot inspection so I'll probably get them to do that.

definitely wouldn't buy from a dealership, I'm looking around on craigslist right now.

I'm a new driver about to get my Novice Liscence in Britiish Columbia
I'm not one of those obnoxious drivers who get a Thrill...
Just want something that can get me from A to B safely and reliably :)

Thanks,

I just thought that there may be something in particular to check out with every car before buying :)

Anyone else feel free to leave any comments.

Not everyone's parents front the bill for their cars.

If you like civics just find the newest one possible with the lowest km possible in your price range.
