http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2013/04/24/kenseth-team-penalized-after-kansas-win.html

a connecting rod on race winner matt kenseths engine was 3 grams below the minimum weight allowed. joe gibbs racing buys their engines from TRD. after last years fiasco with TRD motors blowing up left and right and now this i would be seriously thinking about building my own engines once again.

Kenseth was docked 50 points, and lost the three Chase bonus points he would have received for winning last weekend’s event at Kansas Speedway, after a connecting rod in the engine of his No. 20 car failed to meet minimum weight. The violation was discovered Tuesday in post-race engine inspection at the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C.

In addition, crew chief Jason Ratcliff has been fined $200,000, suspended for the next six Sprint Cup events -- including the non-points Sprint All-Star Race -- and placed on probation through Dec. 31. Car owner Joe Gibbs was docked 50 owners’ points and had his license suspended for six races, during which he will be ineligible to receive owners’ points. Kenseth’s pole at Kansas will not be allowed for eligibility into the 2014 Sprint Unlimited at Daytona, and in a rare step Toyota was docked five points in the manufacturer standings.

theyve always been strict on the engines. you almost never see engine infractions anyway its usually something with the suspension or body. besides look at what they levied against carl long because he was racing a wore out motor. he cant even race in the cup series because he doesnt have the money to pay the 200k dollar fine they gave him.

what would an illegal engine in formula 1 cost a team points and money wise? especially if that illegal engine won the race. the money and points are pretty much standard fines. the real surprise is banning joe gibbs owner license, the toyota points fine and kenseth losing the bonus points for the chase. i think after everyone laughed at the 25 point fine for brad keselowski and pointing out that it wont matter in the chase they rethought the points penalty

This is one of the reasons for the death of competition in the automotive industry. Most of them are cranking out variations of the same crap. I've heard of two "innovations" in the last year: The Eco-boost engine from Ford, and more recently the Chevy Malibu "Eco".
Granted we live in a different time, and I'm not super knowledgeable on what is new or not... but I think it would be an amazing show to just let these guys run wild. Make their effort as a manufacturer the deal breaker, and we'd see some crazy stuff on the road a few years later.
I respect that it is supposed to be a "driver's" sport and all... but I find it incredibly boring to watch. Seeing someone develop a SERIOUS edge over the competition would make me tune in.
This isn't a well thought out argument starter. It is something I thought of when I read the thread. I'd like to see it. Anyone else?

then you see nascar back in the 70s when the 426 hemi stomped the shit out of everything else on the track and they banned it from competition. its a double edged sword because you have to have limits on things somewhere but then you risk having another IROC series which they are getting close to being.

its not nascars fault that teams are bringing illegal parts to the track. blame trd for putting an underweight rod in the motor they built and blame penske racing for whatever they done to their rearends that made them illegal.

it happens in dirt racing too remember when scott bloomquist got fined and a 6 month suspension for soaking his tires in some shit? thats one of the big name stars cheating in a big way.
