Hi looking for a bit of advice when it comes to a Honda civic.

Basically I've heard nothing but how reliable and built proof the V-Tech enginese are in the Civics. And although I know a well maintained engine can last for silly mile I'm looking to get some realistic life expectancy on one of these. Normally I wouldn't touch anything over about 65,000 but there is a lot civics for sale in the area with 100-150,000 miles and am wondering wether I should just discount them or if they are worth a look.

Mainly looking at the Honda Civic Type S 1.6 V-Tech. (before suggesting I just get a Type R insurance prices rule that out or I would in a heartbeat.)

Problem is its hard to know if it's been well maintained or in budged in some back street workshop.

service records
run the vin and see how many owners it's had
basic condition of the body will tell you if an idiot has had it
is the current owner some dumbass teenager or a 50 year old woman?

aside from that you can go get it look at by a mechanic before the purchase.

I would just say that honda vtec engines are " BAD " becouse they were most likely have been raped by the previous owner's. If a previous owner had no clue about cars and just went for the red line all the time , its obvious that the engine wil have problems.
+ japanese cars have the tendency to fuck up if once overheated. So, you should go with someone who knows about hondas or visit the dealer to check its condition.
I bought a b18c4 engine honda, had to practicly buy all new parts :/ .

what generation are u looking forward to buy ?

edit: + hondas consume oil on a regular basis cuz of the vtec . 0.5 litre per 600miles o.O_

hm well thats odd, what honda did you have? Im running 180 hp 1.8 litre engine and I can see the loss of oil when I race, high rev's etc. Ofcourse my Honda may be faulty, it has been rebuild from scratch by my self but many people on forum's say that this happens.

k20a2 here. My oil is a little over the line (Dumbass put too much in) but after some spirited driving and a few vtec pulls  it didnt seem like i lost any oil. still have a little over the line. (Top line. not the bottom line that means you're low on oil lol)

My older brother drove a 03 Civic 4 door.

When he sold it it had 279,000 miles on the odometer and ran fine.

The transmission however, was starting to make noises at that point. But drive ability remained.
