1992 sportline 190e Mercedes with 1jz-gte Chaser motor (cammed not vvti).
This is the first Car I have ever worked on as a project seriously.
I am new to this kind of stuff and any help would be highly appreciated!
I did not do the motor swap or wiring harness or exhaust.
I bught the car *running* But not driveable as a project for me to finish considering I've always wanted a 1jz-gte, 2jz-gte or an rb20/26 swapped car.
AS of right now.
The car is overheating at idle.
I've spent all day working on it to try and figure out why the radiator isn't circulating (replaced thermostat) Pulled water pump it's still the stock original water pump (in perfect condition) THe housing is in perfect condition as well.
As I started to notice though.
THe right side of the radiator would get hot (facing the car) same with the top hose that goes from top of the water pump to the radiator).
Bottom of the hose would be ice cold (False alarm for thermostat being bad)
As I pulled all the pullys, and timing belt off and got to pulling the water pump out I noticed when I stuck the thermostat in it didn't seal to the very top of the water pump meaning I think the water pump is pulling water from the radiator, rather then pulling water from the bottom where the thermostat is.

Dropped a damn pieace of glas on foot that was like 80 lbs from about a foot up :(. Was wearing running shoes pretty much like being barefoot.
Side note might leave car like this for a few more pay checks
And get Cams, Head gasket, studs/bolts, cam gears, radiator and all new hoses sense it is all out as is, rather then redoing the timing again.

have you tried opening the drain petcock and see if the water comes out the bottom? you may also take the bottom radiator hose and see if coolant freely flows out of the lower opening. if the coolant isnt gushing out you more than likely have gunk or some other restriction in the radiator. you said you replaced thermostat already so im guessing its fine. you did put the thermostat in the correct direction right?

Thermostat is in right way so jiggle valve is on top too, Radiator flows fine.
The problem is the thermostat not reaching the top of the water pump like in pics so it's trying to suck water backwards (from radiator to the thermostat rather then pulled from thermostat to radiator.

I'm not sure if there is a little rubber gusset or gasket or something that fits in between or why the thermostat isn't being long enough!

there shouldve been like a paper looking gasket. did you not put any gasket at all on it?
e/ ill leave this here for now but wait until maybe someone with knowledge about that engine can tell you something. i would assume it takes a gasket for the thermostat but im not 100% sure about that kind of motor

The thermostat has a gasket thats rubber on the outside of it.
You have to look at the pics to understand what I'm talking about though.
The inside part that the coolant flows around does not touch the aluminum block part that goes upwards to infront of the head to radiator is. meaning it tries to suck water out of radiator.
