Depends what you plan to do with this bike and what your style of riding is. There are probably 30 bikes I can list off. A price-range helps too.

In the $5,000 range, you can get quite a bit (and a lot better than an '04 883)

Look into a Softail (02-04 range) or a Vulcan.

my plane is just to take the bike out whenever its nice. My father does have a bike of his own and he takes it for long drives. My style of riding- not too sure on this since iv never rode a bike before! :( Price range would be 4k max.

Get an old 600cc or something. Or better yet, an old Honda CB 750. You can pick one up for dirt cheap. There are parts everywhere. Decent power, but pretty forgiving. It will also give you something you can work on... or rather will have to sooner or later. You'll enjoy it though.

In all honesty, longer rides you'll want a cruiser

Yamaha V Star
Kawasaki (I believe) Vulcan
Suzuki Boulevard

Do not get a rocket for long cruises, althought there are some nicer rockets you can essentially get brand new, out the door at 4,000, which are great for beginners. You might want to look into the Sport (not supersport), which are almost the same performance as the supersports with a more relaxed ride.

SV650 Suzuki
FZ600 Yamaha
KTM I believe also has one, just cant recall the name offhand.

750 cc is very subjective to what kind of engine it is. a 750cc inline-4 is a lot of power, where a 750 v-twin, which is pretty close to that 883 you linked, isn't as insane.

the 883 wouldn't be a bad starter, it's got enough power and torque to be a fun bike for a while and won't kill you from minor mistakes like a big supersport might.

I started on a Kawasaki Ninja 250, which is a great entry-level bike.

Skip the 250 and get the new Ninja 300.
You can walk out of the door with one for probably 4,500, and they have ABS which is going to be great for someone new.
