Ignatz gave you a pretty good walk through in post 4 to set the timing. I would do it this way.
1. take off the distributor cap - I assume you marked it when you pulled the head the first time.
2. Note about where #1 plug wire is on the cap.
3. With a socket or wrench on the crank pulley rotate ( not a good idea to use the key ) until the rotor gets close to pointing at where the #1 plug wire would be if the cap was on.
4. Now focus on the crank timing marks and IF you were close with the rotor the timing mark should be coming up soon. Put the crank timing mark on Zero.
NOTE- both the crank timing mark on zero and the rotor pointing at #1 plug wire have to happen at the same time. IF the crank timing mark is zero the rotor is on the opposite side of where it should be,,, they call that 180 off as in 180 degrees. Go around one more time.
5. Once both are correct, NOW you can align the cam timing mark. YES from looking at the engine from the front, the cam mark is to be lined up with the Ledge on the right side as shown in the pic.
You can use Ignatz screw driver method for confirmation though I would trust the crank timing marks.
Keep a bit of tension on the chain as you turn the crank. Not a good idea to back up if you go to far, best to go around twice again. I few degrees past and yes you can back up BUT keep some tension on the chain or it could bunch up at the bottom and bust sumpin as the left side is so loose.
What you should have done is put the crank/distributor timing lined up first before you pull the head and you don't need to worry about the chain.
NOTE: even your best line up, you may have to rotate just a bit to get the cam gear on with the chain tight on the right side, the tension side. NOT much, just a little and maybe. The chain needs to be about as tight as possible on the right side with all marks lined up otherwise you could be a Tooth off.
So i have a 1991 190 e 2.3 8 valve
I resurfaced/valve job (no pressure check for cracks)
either when turning the car on after the install it
A) Bent Valves

Has Cracks in it
C) was warped past limits
D) Timing chain tensor was cross threaded in and isnt sealing properly!!!
So i pulled a 1993 2.3 190e 8 valve head off
Took it to get checked for crack / resurfaced/ valve job ( hope 93 works for 91)
now with the HEAD OFF
can i rotate to #1 on distributor ( i had done this before)
Line with TDC mark on CRANK SHAFT ( or should i line it with 0?)
how do i know im on compression stroke( must be pointing at #1 for that?)
Can i get blocks of wood and set my head on that. and just turn the CAM
until i line up with correct marking ( will i be able to set it perfect/ easyer this way?)
can i just throw the head on (already timed)
and just slip the chain over ( i notice it is off TDC mark on crank
until i tighten the tensor . then it moves to TDC)
So i am a noobie guys lol need alot of help
ALSO what do i do if the chain tensor was crossed threaded into my block and isnt seating all the way in ( cant get my alt back in )
...can i set head on blocks of wood. and time while it s off the engine?
i can just turn cam with gear on it untl it is timed correct. is this a good idead?
