2007 pontiac g6

Car runs really loud, not engine noise , but it sounds like the fan. It runs really loud and makes a tick noise every few moments.
Its probaly pretty obvious that maybe my fan or something is started to go out?

Or could it be something else thats causing the fan to run like that?

The fan (or fans) runs off of a relay.

Most are thermostatically controlled, and kick on when they sense coolant has reached a certain temperature. And they kick off in the same way, once the coolant has reached its optimal temp range.

Electric fan - The louder the fans get, the closer they are to death. Voltage drop could also cause excessive fan noise.

Relay - Relay could be not functioning properly, and can turn on intermittently (doubt this one)

Thermostatic control for fans - A couple things could influence this. 1.) Control switch is bad, and can't sense temp accurately, or 2.) You are actually running a hot motor, maybe low on coolant? maybe a leak somewhere? causing the fan to come on much more frequently.

Check for leaks, check coolant temp. Then I'd investigate the life of your fans.

Thanks, my CEL is on, and sometimes my temp gauge works and doesnt work, and sometimes my CEL is on and isnt..lol. But im pretty sure it was running loud before the CEL even started showing up.

I looked it up and the g6 fans are electric. I believe my alternator is going out though, i have a pretty decent aftermarket system installed in my car thats still running off the stock alternator that i dont think can handle the power( i say this because my headlights dim sometimes when car is idle), got it installed in september. So i would assume an alternator could be part of the problem?

I doubt it, but who knows. If your temp sensor is going out the fans will run full blast. It's sort of an extra layer of protection because the computer isn't seeing what the actually temperature of the engine is.
Get your car scanned. You're probably going to be replacing the temp sensor. Not sure about your car but mine has two. One for the gauge and one for the computer.

Okay. Some (not sure if Pontiac is one of these or not) of the OEM fans are controlled via your temp gauge sensor, and they piggyback the same signal. So if you're having temp gauge issues, I'd locate the sensor (most likely in your thermostat housing, some are inside the fins of the radiator) it may be corroded. Could be as easy as that.

If that's not the problem. Check your voltage.

Check voltage with

Car off (nothing hooked up)
Car on (at idle)
Car on (slightly rev'd to around 2500)

You should see something similar to

12.xx Volts without any load, and battery cables taken off

13.9-14.5 Volts at an Idle

14+ while revved. (hopefully not exceeding 14.8)

Then if you have your baseline voltages, go ahead and turn on the radio or any other electronics you feel may be the problem. Then check voltage again. Car running.

If it's below 13.8 volts or so, you are not adequately charging your battery, and this could be your issue.

And I don't recommend using the cars Volt Gauge as reference, definitely use a Multimeter.

They sure are, and quite affordable considering what beast is hiding under the hood.

Yeah, pretty easy to mod from what i saw on the g8 forums. They make some pretty nice numbers for a 4 door sedan..

G8s hold their value too much though
