06 jetta TDI
169k miles
i love the car. not so much for the sportyness and cool factor,
but for the fact its a diesel wich means it supposedly should last forever(figurativly speaking ofc)
and the gas mileage is crazy like 45 mpg average.

i just have a few question

are the 1.8 or 2.0 cant remember TDI engines as good as they say how many miles will it get before loses compression or something usually goes out on them

any known other issues with this car? because first gear feels wierd and awefully short not sure if its slipping momentarily or if its just supposed to be that short.

also any schedualed maintanence around 170k?

I can't speak for your year but

One of my old bosses owned a 2003 1.9 TDI, that I drove pretty frequently. Motor was great! Needed a couple gloplugs once. Other than that, good to go.

I'll say first was a pretty short gear, and if you aren't used to diesels and how they drive, they can feel a bit "weird" at first.

That being said, if the car is bucking like a bronco, something is probably wrong.

and I'd be amazed if any make of vehicle would provide scheduled maintenance at anything remotely close to 170,000 miles.

All motors wear out at different rates. It all depends on how well it was driven and maintained.

thanks for the info

what are gloplugs
and what i meant by schedualed maintanence is like i know they say like timeing belt and water pump would be replaced at 120k miles on a tfsi dunno about tdi, but with that being said it would be Every 120k miles,

my question is would there be anything needing to be serviced AGAIN on this car, like up for round 2 replacement :p basically im asking what are you suppose to service at 80k miles lol

oh and whats the average life span of these engines?

Diesels don't have spark plugs like conventional gasoline motors, because the diesels' mixture ignites itself from being under compression, and by using such a low octane fuel, as diesel is.

They essentially warm the block of the motor so it's easier to ignite the mixture when it's cold out. Lots of rigs use block heaters as well. Having a bad glow plug can trigger a check engine light.

That's VERY generalized.

And yes, timing belt motors, regardless of induction system should be routinely checked, and replaced (at roughly 80-120k miles). Give or take.

And if diesels are known for anything it's going a million miles without breaking a sweat. VW makes a pretty decent one too. Just make sure the timing belt/water pump has been changed, as I know personally those are a PAIN to change.

1.9 TDi engines are pumpe-duse system, which has outstanding torque and nice power output, they also unfortunately have extremely high pressure bursts in the engine making them selfdestruct over time if driven "flat out". I know few TDi which fell apart in under 25k miles (flywheel, bearings etc....)
Also, many people who drive turbo engines do not know that turbine needs to cool down slowly after hard driving, don't just turn off the engine once you come to a stop, let it run minute or two.
I would reccomend common-rail diesels instead, that's 2.0 TDi. They do use a bit more fuel, have less torque (hadrly noticable), develop torque and power more linear making less stress on the engine, and are cheaper to fix if break down (they have just 1 pump vs. pumpe-duse 4 pumps - one for each cylinder)
