Carfax checks out, drive feels good, only one owner, eye test under the hood checks out

Only thing I'm concerned about is if the mileage is authentic without a doubt. The seller seemed trustworthy, a mid 40's family man who lives in a nice neighborhood.

Any way I could check to make sure it's absolutely true? It's a 2002 mercury mountaineer

pretty hard to make sure its 100% correct.

if your worrying this much about a vehicle, pay a shop to look at it before purchase.

good idea, I can probably get that done for free since I know a mechanic well

also good records and receipts show that the owner takes care of the vehicle, most people will replace things when they break, not when they should be replaced.

It's worth the 80$ to have a mechanic do a good inspection
Or you can drive it for a week and have it destroy itself because there are eggs in the radiator, water in the tranny fluid, and a million CEL's that were reset.

watch out for valve cover gasket leaking and bad coil packs. Crank it while it's cold. Make sure he hasn't warmed it up before you got there. If it idles rough, or stutters, expect $500 or so for coil packs.
