Specifically I'm looking to buy an SUV

There's a nice Mercury Mountaineer for 3500 but it's got 150k miles. Perhaps it's a good candidate to surpass 200k though

Routine oil change history, one previous owner with no accidents reported, and recent tranny/brake repair make it intriguing

I really don't know that much about cars though so if anyone could advise me on this particular situation or perhaps another route I could go, please do so

Look underneath for leaks/greasy parts. are you looking at the 4.0 v6 or the v8?

my 5.0 literally had 212k miles when i put it into my ranger(was lied to about mileage and in a bad situation) and with good regular service using motorcraft parts it will last a long time yet.

if you can get receipts on repairs thats great, but overall you just need to drive it and you should be able to tell a lot from the drive.

i'd just grab a 1999+ blazer 4x4 with the 4.3 and 4l60 auto if i was going to buy a small suv.

It's a 4.6 v8 and I can verify the mileage before purchase can't I? Carfax reports every DMV visit among other transactions that I'm sure the mileage could be somewhat pinpointed as honest or not.

They did not say "highway miles" and I know to steer clear from those types.

The hood looks pretty clean. No rusted plugs, valves look clean, no leakage or grease spots.

Perhaps it would be best to take it to my local auto shop to get a second opinion. We've been conducting business with them for a very long time so I'm sure they would be honest about it.

All the Blazers I've looked at have rust forming and I generally think they look ugly compared to the Explorer and Mountaineer.

The interiors of them I don't like either, with the Mountaineer and Explorer I can usually get leather for the same price with similar specs.

don't buy a Mercury anything...

if you really want to cover your ass take it to 1-2 reputable dealerships for a pre-inspection (preferably the same dealership as the car)
