So, I posted about the '89 Jeep Cherokee I bought when I had only had it for about a week.

Since winter break, myself and my brother have been doing a bit of work - basic tune up stuff - and I have been doing work on the interior.

So far, we have changed:

4 Falken Rock Mountain ATS tires (all terrain)
front and rear breaks
spark plugs
o2 sensor
oil, air and fuel filters (and oil change)
track bar
welded the exhaust manifold (there were a few cracks) and replaced the gasket
cleaned the fuel injectors
new air filter boot

we are still going to change the upper and lower ball joints on the front drivers side as well as the front control arm bushings, fix the window washer lines, replace some of the vacuum lines and redo some of the wiring under the hood..most likely going to get a new exhaust pipe too as it is in rough shape

also still figuring on how i want to design the bumper and cargo rack

As far as the interior, I have:

stripped the cargo area carpet (it was nasty)
applied spray in bed liner to the cargo area
painted all of the interior plastic
painted all of the door panels with carpet&vinyl paint
installed 'new' back seats (from pick-a-part)
reapholstered the head liner with black vinyl
wired in light strips in the head liner to replace the dome lights
put in new front speakers
in the process of installing the head unit and subs from my POS car (I had to cut a chunk out of the dash for the head unit is it needed room when it folds out - it is a touch screen that hides away)
and my gf got me front seat covers for Christmas

here are a few pictures thus far:

cool work you got going on, to bad you had to cut the dash up liek that for the folding screen, i hope you find a way to make it look decent

i'll take a better picture in the daylight, but i took some of the vinyl from the piece i cut off and glued it to the cut out..it doesn't look great, but looks way better than leaving the hole with foam there..it will also look a lot better with the faceplates put back on

Man... the dashes in these things are a pain. Kind of easy to warp and crack when you're taking them out and doing stuff to them.

So, I don't know a ton about electrical/wiring, and I'm hoping someone might be able to help me here.

In the process of putting the radio in, we found that there wasn't much room in the dash for a lot of the unneeded wires with plugs that were in the back of the unit. The wiring harness was left as it should be, but there was another set of wires. There were plugs for satellite radio input, media link BUS, auxillary video cable and left and right audio cables, navigation system input, steering wheel control input, rear view video camera input, ipod USB and audio input, and FM antenna input - needles to say, it was a cluster of plugs that took up a lot of room. We cut the unneeded plugs, not thinking anything of it - all but the auxillary audio cables and the FM antenna input plugs. After cutting the plugs, we were able to get the head unit to fit fine - but once I went to use the radio, there was nothing. It just made a thump noise every other second, kind of like a steady beat - no static or anything of that nature. The CD player portion worked fine, and I have yet to try the auxillary plug in the front. I just don't understand what would cause the FM radio to stop working now as the plug for the antenna input was unaffected.

In the process of moving the wires around, we unplugged the antenna, but we plugged it back in (I think the whole way?). I'm not sure if it is possible that something happened to the antenna as it is really old, but I would think if that were the case, then there would be static?

If anyone has a solution or explanation for this, I would gladly appreciate it. Even if I have made irreversible damage to the external wiring, I would still like to find a solution such as some sort of FM receiver I could plug into the front USB port or auxillary audio so I can get radio. I would hate to have spent $300 on something that I just partially ruined unintentionally (even if I did buy it a few years ago).

Unless you cut into the AM/FM antenna wire (i find it hard to think you did, but possible) that *could* cause static.

I would first try making sure that there is no corrosion on the antenna input itself (again hard to believe there would be but possible)

try those two steps, then come back.
