I mentioned getting a Mazda to a friend and he immediately started giving me the "no way" look, but wouldn't explain.

Is there something bad with these cars?

less common so people assume they are junk.

as with any manufacturer they all have good and bad ones but mazda has plenty of good ones.

i drive one myself and like it but they do tend to rust and burn oil in the long run, 2 of my buddys with mazda 3s have had engine issues related to low oil, one had to change his engine.
i drive a mazda 6 witch also burns oil but not much, simply keep an eye on it and your good to go its nothing to serious unless you ignore it. i have an 05 and rust is starting to show.
any mazda protege is probably a rust bucket

As mentioned, they have thin steel. So if you live in a road salt heavy state, be cautious, as they are rust prone.

and a lot of people associate Mazda with rotary engines, which many don't understand, so they steer clear, despite Mazda's conventional piston engines, which for the most part are quite reliable.

There are exceptions to every situation though...So inspect the vehicle, no matter what make, before you buy.

have a 94 miata, no rust yet, but its going to happen sooner or later.

and yes they all burn oil. but its not a huge amount, as long as you watch the oil level you are fine though maybe less than a quart per 1k miles.
