I laugh, because this winter has been so nice to us. And because I know, it could be ME tomorrow...

Normally we get over 350" of snow a season. We've received 40" total.

New York City and Boston can have it, we Northerners need a break after last winter.

Although I haven't gone snowboarding as much as I hoped, I'm fairly pleased with El Nino. Fairly pleased indeed.

If your area gets serious snow, people usually have a winter dedicated vehicle*. That, or gnarly winter tires, if they are willing to sacrifice their ride to the salt gods.

If they don't it's almost always due to affordability - at least here.

*unless they drive a truck, SUV, or 4x4 during the normal season.

EDIT: this doesn't apply if you live in a city or metropolitan area. You either walk, or if the roads are cleared (or sub 4" snow) you can manage a smaller, lower, vehicle.

What about snowmobiles, atvs and dirtbikes? Could you ride those on the street if the conditions get bad enough?

Absolutely. I'm in between sleds right now, but yeah, before I had my license that would be my primary mode of transport during the winter months. I lived on that thing.

The roads are never clear of snow, there's usually always a half inch of hard pack on the surface. Makes for excellent snowmobiling conditions.

I'd argue I could drive the 22 miles to work, faster, some mornings if I still had a sled.

Officially the coldest air in the nation, once again. This is the first real taste of normal winter we've had all year. Can't complain, really.
