Isn't e85 supposed to get a lot better mileage than 91+ octane?

Is it cheaper to purchase per gallon if you have it available?

depends on your area. It's cheaper than 91 over here but it's a lot better to run for the engine compared to 91, especially on turbo's/superchargers. Only downside is you typically need injectors/tune to run it, there are limited stations where it is available, and worse MPG.

It usually runs about the same price as 87oct (regular here) but it is 100-105 octane depending on the blend and time of year. IIRC fuel economy is 20-25% worse.

Wonder when it'll become somewhat available out here.

If it hasn't by now it likely won't. It isn't quite as viable in really cold climates. Also the farther away you are from the refineries and the corn supply the less prevalent it is.

I start my car in 0 degrees F without any hassle.

Also, I get roughly 15-20% worse fuel economy.

When it's cold you are actually pumping closer to E-70. Summer will be E-85 to E-90 in most places. The cold weather accelerates the absorption of water by the ethanol. It is more important to keep E-85 sealed air tight than gas.
