I guess I did say that and I apologize for exaggerating for effect, but a lot of people do manage to screw up their first car and that stands to reason that you shouldn't get something with a ton of power to do so in.

I have personally noticed the people who screw up their first cars are the ones who drive the pieces of shit that don't care about them. Get something you want is nice and in your price range power is not an issue there really. If you are getting a car for power you generally have an understanding of cars then and will treat it right. My friends that drove beaters did exactly that beat on them and drove reckless. When you are proud of what you drive generally you are far more careful and less reckless.

My best friends first car was an 02 ws6 full bolt ons and a 150 wet shot. He never wrecked it he did blow the rear but that's pretty common. Moser 12 bolt went in. He still has that car 12 years later it is now a 1000 hp beast.

I learned to drive in an open field with a farm truck. By the time I got my license, I had been driving that thing around for 4 or so years. I have a flawless record (got one speeding ticket, but it was thrown out in court), and the closest I've been to a crash was hydroplaning...which I was able to keep under control and out of the ditch. Defensive driving is a lifesaver, and not just for you.
I agree with Andy though... Driving a pos for a year or two makes people a believer in preventative maintenance. A 1985 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer (yes..with the wood paneling) taught me many hard lessons. Like what happens when sand gets packed into a brake drum...makes for a few tense moments lol.

More toward the OP.... If you'd like to show a little class, and maturity toward your parents, I suggest getting something reasonable. Grab something a few years older with a much smaller price tag. When it comes time for it, you will appreciate the upgrade, and they will appreciate your forethought and responsibility.

You know one other point I want to make here on the subject of your first car having a lot of power is this. If you get an 80 HP beater for your first car, then you will have no experience with high powered cars. So when you turn 20 and finally decide to get that Vette, you are still going to want to play with it just the same as if you had gotten it at 16. Its going to be just as dangerous no matter what age you decide to get into performance Cars. And as far as how likely you are to be hurt in a performance car vs a beater don't forget, performance cars are designed to handle wreckless driving. Generally have much better stopping power, crumple zones and air bags, much better traction etc. They are designed to take impact at much higher speeds and let the driver walk away from it.

My best friend was put in a 79 F100 with a 300 I6 as a first vehicle. It was a POS. He knew it was a POS. He knew his parents didn't trust him. He beat it to shit and rolled it on a dirt road 2 years later. We are in our mid 20's and he still can't take care of anything. The moral of the story is don't assume everyone has the same thought process as a teenager. I was like you and your best friend. Lots of people were not.

Enter midlife crisis crashes. You dont have to be young to get in over your head.

Exactly. People have accidents at all ages. When you're young it's because of inexperience. When you're middle aged, it's because (in my opinion) of over confidence. And when you get old it's because of slowed reaction times and motor skills. There's no "safe age" to own a performance car. You just have to get one, and get comfortable with your driving ability in it. It's really that simple. I got so much crap when I was 18 for owning a Vette at a young age, always told I was too young and was going to wreck it. Just because the car goes 175, doesn't mean I'm going to drive everywhere at 175 lmao. Being young doesn't make you retarded. Take what you have and own it. Realize what's at stake, and take responsibility, and don't be another statistic...
