I think it's plausible to say he
might have done it on purpose. You can't actually prove what his intent was at the time. Maybe he hit the gas because he wanted to avoid him.
I agree with you that it's irresponsible to claim he did it on purpose, there is no way of knowing based on the evidence we have access to at this time.
Given his record of temper issues, it's certainly a possibility that he did. Ward was stupid for putting himself in harms way, but making comments like "Darwinism at it's finest" and "i don't feel sorry for stupid" is incredibly unempathetic, rude, and likely hypocritical.
If Stewart had no intent to harm him, then I really feel sorry for him. That's not an easy thing to live with.
