Entry level fluke

Well I said fuck it and bought a cheap one from Napa here in town. It gives the same readings as my auto-fluke so I suppose it's still fairly accurate. Now, I relocated my battery to the trunk and of course the probes aren't long enough to test certain things in the engine bay. Could I secure an extra length of wire around one of the probes to help it reach, and if so, will it give me a reading that's way off from the added length/resistance?

Probably. Ask ozzyarmy he is/was an industrial electrician.

It might help if I know what you're trying to do.

E: but no, it wouldn't as long as you have good contact. Run a wire nut down it.

Testing alternator and other charging/ignition components.

I'm gonna pull the voltage regular today and get a look at it and the brushes. I'm assuming it's just not making enough contact to charge. Exciter seems to be functional as I'm getting 12v at the wire and the warning lamp works.

The belt has no unwanted play in it, but I believe the bearing within the alternator is also fucked as it squeeks pretty loudly under load.

Get a 12-20v DC source hooked up to the input, ground it out and test the output voltage. Don't go above 20v, you'll burn the regulator up.

It's probably the alternator though.

Talked to the shop today, apparently since it was tuned with the MAF and ground issues the fueling is now way out. Its going back on the dyno tomorrow.
