Hotter thermostats increase engine efficiency. You have a pressurized system. The boiling point of your coolant is over 235. You might be able to run 1 degree more timing by running it at 185-190 but you are going to sacrifice fuel economy and decrease the pcv system's ability to work.

I dont care about fuel economy and fuck the pcv system. Its why i had to put a catch can on. Within 3k miles the entire can will be full. If i didnt have that it would gunk up my intake manifold and tb like it did on my last challenger and charger that didnt have it.

The thing is with a lot of the newer hemi cars, 2011+ specifically, is that they can reach upwards of 230 degrees on the coolant. They run extremely hot. Not on my car im sure but people in the south complained on the forums of that and running the 180 tstat vs the 195 stock one made a huge difference a long with running the one fan always on and lowering the start temp of the other.

The pcv may suck but the corrosive compounds that build up in oil without the pcv working properly will eat your engine from the inside.

Most cars factory on temp for the high speed fan is 230 or 235 now. Thats why their gauges are dummy gauges that read a range. They dont want people panicking at 230. You want your low speed fan on 15 degrees higher than your t stat temp and off at 5 above tstat temp. You don't want it running all of the time or the thermostat can't function properly.

A 180 isn't terrible. My trans am had a 160 in it when i bought it and i couldn't even defrost the windshield. I promptly put a stock 195 back in it. Running the engine too cool is as bad as too hot. There's a laundry list of reasons.

Yeah but i love the cold to an almost lunatic degree haha. I dont need a defroster :) . I have a 160 in my spirit r/t. Then again, in that car, it doesnt get driven in winter/etc and with what i do with it, the cooler the better.

Iirc, the stock low fan setting is 199.99, so only 5 over the stock tstat. and the high speed i think is right around 220.

Whats the low fan off? The idea is if the low off is lower than the tstat temp the tstat will close and your fan keeps running because the ect still reads above the off point due to lack of circulation. Then the coolant in the radiator gets cooled too much. The next time your tstat opens you get thermostatic shock which isn't good for anything. You want the temp to stay stable just above the tstat temp as much as possible.

low fan off i think is anything under 199. Dont quote me on that cuz i have no idea. Its just the number that comes to mind when i read about it on a challenger forum a while back.

Thats right in line with what it should be. Off temp 5 over tstat. Set your off at 185 and on at 195-200ish

Right on the nuts.

I run a 190 tstat. Fan off @ 195, Fan on at 205

I personally think a 180 is overkill for these motors. The 5.7 and 6.4L do very well with maintaining temps. Even here in houston the hottest this thing ever got was 215.

Thats me beating the dog shit out of it in rush hour during 100+ temps

ive read up a lot on the 180 tstat mod and nothing bad ever came from it. I have the tstat sitting here, might put it in tomorrow when i install the painted stuff from my other thread.

The 5.7 and the 6.4 are similar because its the same motor pretty much. 6.4 is a stroked 5.7 lol

Nothing readily apparent is going to happen but there really isn't anything to gain either.

well, a cooler motor is always better for wear and tear on parts. If its designed to handle 220F, that means it can handle anything under it also lol. 40$ for the jet tstat, for a cooler motor, especially how i drive it, is worth the slight peace of mind knowing it isnt glowing under the hood lol
