considering you said you don't wanna spend much more than $2k i'm going to tell you now you won't be buying a brand new one. $7-8k range for that which i find crazy considering how quickly they can be destroyed.

I dont mind spending more if its worth it. I saw a few new bikes priced around $4k but i wasnt really sure what I was looking at. Yamaha has the TT-R230 for around $4k. Why is it so much cheaper than their other 250CC 4 strokes?

I hope you're pretty handy at fixing stuff because anything you buy for $2,000 is going to break on you. I know this from experience with my 400ex. Also, if you go with a dirt bike, be prepared to lay it down quite often while you learn. Also learned this one from experience..

Ive rebuilt the two stroke in my jet ski and its a yamaah 701. Two strokes are a piece of cake, 4 maybe not as much.

motocross bikes have more engineering because they need to be able to jump pretty big right out of the box

the ttr is more about mud/rocks/climbing so the suspension for example doesn't need to be greatly expensive.
