82-87 chevy trucks are appreciating rapidly in the southeast. Everyone has cut them up and shoved them in the mud for years now. Your best choice for the money is a 99-02 1500. They hold up to mileage extremely well and the 5.3 is bulletproof. The h.o versions are over 300hp and even with 4wd and 35" tires you can still get mid teens combined mileage. A gen I sbc in say an 85 model with a carb, intake, and cam to make 300hp would probably be in the 9-12mpg range.

Yes lifting it is more expensive but you get IFS and much nicer steering. Everything about it is newer and more comfortable. There are actually more junkyard parts and aftermarket for those than the earlier trucks thanks to cash for clunkers. Its an lsx so I need not say anything more for the powertrain aftermarket.

If it was a dedicated offroad truck I would suggest the solid axle beast but the GMT-800 is a much better driver.

I don't see the point unless he is wheeling it. Honestly he could get by just fine with any cheap beater car. It doesn't snow that much on the southern face of the Appalachians this far south. Where he is talking about moving is 2hrs north of me. They get 3-10 inches a year in most places.
