The Frs/brz/86 has very little in common with miata other than small rwd car. The weight distribution is far better in the FRS, Limited slip diff, low centre of gravity... They handle nothing alike, I drove both the Miata and the frs in the same day (got my car at an auto-mall) and they're both great cars but they are not as similar as you'd suggest.
I don't understand the obsession with changing the tires. No point in spending ~2k on decent wheels and tires (even thats low IMO, with my preferable setup it's going to run me nearly 3k), after that you'll want suspension etc and you'll end up dumping nearly 4500 if you do it right.
For 4500 you could put an exhaust, a tune, suspension, and an intake and have tons left over.
Our miata is lowered with new shocks/dampers/springs and much stickier tires. I would put it against a BRZ of FR-S any day as far as handling. It just lacks the power (for now, LS swap might be in the future).
Im not sure what size wheels the brz comes with but the miata we have has 15''s I believe. They were very cheap for some moderately lightweight wheels and the tires werent bad either. Didnt ever break 1k let alone 2k.
Its not really an obsession with changing them, but he asked for suggestions and assuming he wants a well handling car (why else would you buy a brz/frs?) then tires are the limiting factor right now.

There's no logical reason for changing anything. The car is brand new. New everything. Drive the car a bit before buying the upgrades. It doesnt need anything to do what it was supposed to do.
I agree. Personally I wouldnt buy any huge upgrades right away. Just stick with the little stuff like window tint.
