I just made a breakthrough on the tune in my Trans Am. I compared a stock 02 Camaro tune file to my 00 tune and I found the 00 tune has very aggressive throttle cracker and throttle follower decay and delay values. I've edited my tables and it helped but after looking at the 02 tables I was encouraged to move them even more. I also found a table that is a modifier for in gear spark retard vs knock sensor tip in that was quite different than mine. There is a spot with very low spark values at what is effectively parking lot/coasting speed and airflow areas which is much lower than my smoothed spark map. I think between the follower/cracker table change and consistent spark from changing that modifier table what was left of my cam surge and bucking should be completely gone. All I would have left after that is to nail down the cold start idle flare control. For some reason it wants to die if it is started between 40 and 60 degrees but not higher or lower. I don't think it is a base running airflow problem, my histogram looks good for that. There are 10 or 11 tables that all coexist to produce a correct start up routine. It is by far my least favorite thing to tune because you only get 1 shot to test a change and you have to wait on the engine to cool back down. It's rather painstaking.
Oh yeah, I got a promotion yesterday. It's a series of $.50/hr step raises every 6 months for 2 years which doesn't amount to much but I'm now in a supervisory role as a Senior Operator. It's a very big change in my day to day job and I'll no longer be doing any physical work on a day to day basis unless SHTF. It's going to be challenging. It is a lot of responsibility and I can get my ass in a sling with a pen stroke. Most people make S.O. after 10-20 years of experience. I made it at 4.5yrs so I'm quite a bit younger than most... The shift I'm moving to has an average age of 48 amongst operators. I'm just over half that. I'm not looking forward to the issues that is going to cause. I'll have more overtime available to me and I'll be forced to work a big chunk of it. Making less than $90k/yr in this position is pretty much impossible.
Ever think about working in a specialty shop, like a fab or a tune shop? If you linked those 2 maps together by yourself to figure out how to get the buck gone, thats the kind of shit people pay a lot of money for...
And congrats on the promotion man, thats fucking sick.. Supervisory rolls are always nice, even when the start pay is shit, anybody that wants to move up should take em.. I had a q&a position for awhile, being paid the same amount with more work.. But it was totally worth it.
A little update from me too, I'm getting ready to put an application in for SSD benefits.. I had to quit my job as an electrician due to physical demands and the fact that if I have any open wounds, I can't receive my Remicade, so I could die, lol.. But the good news is I have a job offer at a State Farm agency in a sales roll.. I've watched my wife climb up the ladder from sales position in insurance to senior commercial account manager for a huge firm.. They offer all the licenses and everything, so there is some real opportunity to move up..
I've gone completely into remission on the physical side, but I'm still on short term disability because they have me on high doses of prednisone and they just started a taper off, so my hands and feet are constantly cramping.. But besides that, life is great here...
Got to test drive a 2015 Audi Sq5 the other day, and holy shit that car was fun.. Going up to the Subaru dealership up the road later this week on a nice day to test drive the STI launch edition.. I'm thinking about buying one, not 100% sure though yet...
And random question for anybody with experience in both set ups... What would you guys say is more comfy for a DD.. Multi link or wishbone?
e: And the wife is 2 weeks late, so I might be a daddy sooner than later. Told her to pick up a prego test today.
