The 500 is tried and true. I have a 12GA that has primarily been used as a duck gun for the last 10 years as well as a deer/hog gun when walking the swamps. I use it for anything that I don't want to take my 870 into. I've also used it as a boat paddle, and a club. I may have cleaned it once back in 2007 or 2008. When I pump the action a shell goes in every time, without fail. Kind of the opposite of the Benelli Super Vinci I had.
I never really hear anything bad about Benelli especially a Super Vinci. Did you buy it used? Sounds like there may have been some underlying issues?
I have about 3,500 assorted rounds out of my Super Nova with not a single issue.

It will be an easy gun to learn on. If you want her shooting handgun rounds look at the keltec sub 2000 and beretta storm. I have a sub 2k in desert tan 40 S&W with the Glock 22 magwell. I have 31rd mags for it. It folds up to be a little bigger than an nfl football but its a long gun. I can group 5rds in 4-5in at 100yds with the plastic ring sights. Shooting 40 out of a 16" barrel has some thump. It stays beside my 1911 propped up between my bed and nightstand.
My buddy has a Sub 2000... thing doesn't even get to fold here in California(they put a pin in it.) Still a nice gun and ya 40 S&W out of a 16in barrel is awesome. We plink steel all day long at 100yds with that thing.
