You don't have to insure it, its illegal but he doesn't have to.. If this is your DD you are making a terrible decision for a first DD car..

Buy something cheap man, throw an LS in it for like 5k and mod the sleeper. Then with that experience turn around and buy your supra when your older 20's lower 30's

maybe in 5 years you can afford a decent one lol
