If I were to do a project, should I do it on a d16 or b16?
I'm thinking b16, but give me reasons.
if u have a choice go with the B16 100%.
the D16 is a SOHC engine designed for economy. some of them have a VTEC system called SOHC VTEC which is diff than the VTEC on the B16 or B18 DOHC engines. if u arent aware a DOHC VTEC system's cam shafts have 3 lobes per cylinder for the exhaust and intake side the middle one being the VTEC lobe and outer 2 being the low rpm lobs. a SOHC engine already has all the lobes from the exhaust and intake sides on one camshaft, so there isnt much room left for VTEC lobes. So they only have VTEC in the intake side of the camshaft due to lack of room, compare to the B16 or B18 having VTEC on the intake and exhaust camshaft.
aside from the above, most of the B series engines were designed to be sporty and were what was in all the good honda FWD sports cars in the 90's. they are built from the factory to be naturally aspirated and generally have a higher compression ratios. if u plan on adding forced induction u will most likely have to replace internal parts (pistons) to lower the compression ratio.
probly the most important differance between the 2 is one is a SOHC and the other is a DOHC. DOHC engines capabilities far out exceed what a SOHC engine can do when pushed to the limit. there are more moving parts but by adding more moving parts u lower the amount of stress a DOHC engines camshaft are under. making it easier to hit higher RPM's and make more power. pretty much all high end road race cars use DOHC engines.
hondas D series engines are pretty much all economy based engines used in civics based chassis. there were a few DOHC D series engines that werent to bad like the ZC but are pretty much dwarfed by the B series.
