Yeah, it's a hydrofoiling sailboat. So in the video, if you couldn't tell, I was doing between 20-30 mph in about 15 mph of wind.

And yes, my friend slipped off the boat yesterday, it sailed away for a second. Before he knew it, the boat was being blown away (boat only weighs around 50lbs) and he was frantically trying to catch it. I had to fly up in the Whaler and stop the boat while he swam to it.

If he didn't have a chase boat at that moment, he would have been FUCKED.

At times you are lifted over 5 feet out of the water, if you make ONE mistake while on foil, one misstep, you're in for an interesting time.

Anyone have any experience setting up an outboard on a bass boat? I took my newly acquired boat out of a test today and it GPS'd 62mph which isn't bad for an old turd but it didn't feel very stable. I've driven several different brands including a Stratos similar to this one so I know what it is supposed to feel like. I just don't know how to go about getting there. It has a manual jack plate and a 4 blade stainless prop that I know nothing about (pitch etc). It chine walked on me 1 time at 55mph and I think it started on the starboard side. I had my gear on the port side to simulate a normal load. I think when I get the trolling motor mounted (port side) I will put the batteries on the port side as well. That should balance it out a bit. I've read this model Stratos (278) is pretty stable and user friendly. That leaves me wondering if the previous owner didn't know what he was doing when he was messing with the jack plate and prop. I found a faded spot on top of the motor cover where a guy's name was put on with a decal so I'm 99% sure it was tournament fished when it was new. That means it was set up right at one time.

If anyone has experience setting one up you might be able to save me some googling and a few trips to the lake. It's a 98' Stratos 278 with a 95 Evinrude 150XP. The jackplate has a 4" set back. It has hydraulic steering and it's the V model with a single starboard console. 18' 9".

It's actually pretty slow by today's standards. A nitro Z8 with a merc 250 pro xs will do 80 which is damned ridiculous.

A stable 60mph will get me where i need to go. I fish clark's hill reservoir, the savannah river, lake Marion, and lake Moultrie. Usually none of those require real long runs and i don't tournament fish. If i fish lake murray that's a different story.

My boat isn't pretty and it guzzles gas (3mpg) but it should get the job done with less than 10% of the investment of a new boat.

Damn 80mph on the water is quick anyway you look at it... didn't realize they moved that good. Makes sense if you need to get somewhere fast in a tournament.

I have been like 78mph on GPS in a nice size 35ft boat and it still felt pretty damn fast. I couldn't imagine going 80+ in a little ass boat..

Edit- on the fishing subject I actually got my year license recently so I am going to be going out alot.. would be awesome to have a boat for some of the lakes around here

It's not for the feint of heart. You really have to drive them. It's not point and shoot.

My general rule of thumb is speed on the water feels like 2x that speed on land.
