dude people bitch it's so underpowered because it fucking is. 150 hp wasn't even good 30 years ago. It's hilarious because they even advertise the car as a "remember, a back in the day car", but instead of throwing in a slightly bigger power plant, they give us some of the weakest horsepower numbers we've seen since the prius. all while being like "well, at least it doesn't weigh much for a 30k car".
Give that car a bigger power plant(or at least offer it as an option) and it is still light weight as fuck, except now its in the same class as the wrx/rs/evo. It'll be just as fucking fun in turns, except it'll have more power to back it up. NO it won't fucking kill people, shit the manufacturer might even make some god damn profit. But the fact is the japanese companies just won't do shit to compete with american performance.
inb4, but but but adding bigger power plant defeats the purpose or some stupid shit
And who cares if it is? The people who buy one don't. Mazda is going to sell lots of MX-5s, and most who buy one will not care at all. Like I said, if being underpowered is a bad thing to you, OK. That's fine, that's you, you don't like that. That doesn't mean it has to be more powerful. It's the best selling two seat roaster ever, and it's got less power than a lot of compact entry level sedans. People don't buy it for the power, they buy it because its light, its supposed to be fun to drive, and to some it looks cool. If it had 200 HP I doubt it would even come close to what it's going to sell in its current iteration. If Mazda wants to make a more powerful version, they can make a Mazdaspeed MX-5. And again, it's not just a "light car for it's price", it's literally one of the lightest cars on the market that don't include dirt cheap subcompacts with even worse HP.
I think complaining about the lack of power is entirely a complaint based around a single view on what a car ought to be. And I think it's OK if you think it's underpowered, but that entirely ignores the argument.

Lol... You are so off base it is hilarious. You are utterly clueless. First off, the guy you quoted simply stated that he felt it was underpowered (his opinion) and was ISO an LSX swap. You then produce an essay explaining why no one should/could/would/will do that predicated on the fact that the designer of the car never intended it to have more power than they gave it. You think we are all too obsessed with raw power.
Congrats, you just ostracized yourself from the entire hot rodding culture. You don't understand it, and that is ok. We don't care that you don't. There are a lot of people that post in this forum that have the hot rodder mentality. There are millions of hot rodders world wide. From the redneck with a mullet sticking an off the shelf cam in his fox body mustang to the real estate mogul that sends his Lambo to UGR or GTR to AMS, we are all hot rodders.
You seem to care a lot about what the manufacturer wants a car to do and you seem to think it should do just that and everyone should leave it be. Many people feel the exact opposite and see a stock car as nothing more than a blank canvas.
I don't care how many people actually swap these new miatas. It will be done because there are guys out there capable of doing it. Just for the sake of dropping some extra knowledge on you, the miata is one of the most swapped vehicles in existence behind the 240sx, and fox body mustang. It is the perfect platform for someone that wants to create a monster on the cheap.
Do you really think people don't swap American engines into Japanese cars? That seals the deal imo that you know nothing about modding or the modding culture. People have been putting SBC's in datsuns since the 80's. It's super, super common now because you can buy a $500 5.3L out of a Silverado or Tahoe and swap it in while leaving stock and make the same power + more torque than doing a big turbo upgrade on a lot of the cars in question.
The dealership comment was a jab at you and I brought it up because you really do seem to care about what the OEM wants the car to do. Most of us don't give a flying fuck what they want, and that is why you don't fit in here.
Also, I do not work at a dealership, not even close. Stay small bud.
Edit: to your edit, no one suggested they change the fucking car. The guy said he was iso one of these new ones with an LSX swap. Quit making shit up. We know exactly what the Miata is supposed to be. It also happens to be a perfect starting point for a NASTY autoX, road course, or street sleeper setup. Quit hating because people want to do something to a car besides throw some stickers on it.
I'm not even going to waste my time giving a legitimate response to some idiot who would rather trade insults with grammar and writing skill typical of a 10 year old than have a civil conversation. You're pretty incapable of doing that, but apparently you're pretty good at hypocrisy. Criticize my first post for being an "essay" (I suspect that wasn't one of your strong suits in high school), then proceed to write a post that is 365 words longer than the post you called an essay. Judging by your lack of basic counting and eyeball guestimate skills, I'd wager that math probably wasn't one of your strong suits either.
So I'll do exactly what you did. I'll call you names, insult your aptitude with an overly hostile demeanor, laugh at your ridiculousness, and last (but certainly not least), not give one fuck about what you said. I'd say I'm sorry I interrupted your circle jerk of slamming anything your little clique doesn't like, but I'd never do that. I think it's
hilarious you get so hard for me every time I interrupt your little tea party. What I'm really sorry about is you need forums like this to reinforce your own beliefs and boost what must be a medically dangerous lack of self-worth.
E: Oh, and btw, please give me another long post where you insult me and tell me I know nothing. I can waste a few more minutes if you want to do this little dance again.
