Dude, you bought a dirt bike nearly 25 years old. You didn't think it's ever been beaten on during it's lifetime? The good thing is, it's an old 2 stroke. They are not that hard to work on and pretty cheap.

Run some good gas and oil in it and go like hell!! Hell with those 4 stroke fart boxes. Gimmi the screaming 2 strokes! bbbbrrrrrrrraaaaaap!

Fun ass vid 2 stroke vs 4 stroke=

Pump premium and any old premix oil will run perfect in that bike, if it runs.

I'd be more concerned steering head bearings, swingarm linkage bearings, etc.

I guess I just took my buddy's word for it haha. Obv it's been beat on, and I see evidence of it. Now I do anyways, not a huge deal. But. After listening to him talk about it, he, and just hear me out. He ran 20:1 mixture. No kidding the bike ever ran right. But he drove it a few timea and parked it.

Oh great bike, few small problems. 650 come pick it up tonight. But in all seriousness a bike this year/current shape is dam near 2000 in my area. So heh

Past weekend I went out riding my buddy's 400 4 stroke. and I honestly like it. I almost loved it. Except for the weight, so much low end, just honked top end past his 01 kx250, and would cat walk like no tomorrow. A total pig on the trails though.

That 400 isn't a race bike. A 250f or 450f is a completely different animal.

More premix oil always makes more top end power. You can run a ratio like that if you jet for it. There is no real good reason to if it is still in a dirt bike. We ran Amsoil at 28:1 in our shifter kart engines. They see sustained high rpm though. I run H1R at 40:1 in 2 stroke dirt bikes.

Premix ratios and jetting are a counter intuitive thing. The less oil you run the richer the mixture actually is. At 20:1 it was running like poo because it was lean.

Yea I put some premium at roughly 36:1. Then I noticed, there was no idle screw. Not sure if I rattled it out or what. Either way thsts when I shut it down, seen the oil leak then found the clutch problem.

I rode it like 10 minutes and found all this shit wrong hahaha.
What ever

Clutch arrives in approx 2 weeks. We will see then, all my other stuff will be in by then

Cool deal. Cheap as they are all of my 2 stroke friends have had good luck with Tusk and Pro X clutch kits if you end up needing frictions and steels.

Finially got around to tackling that clutch nut off, had to borrow an impact. And that clutch tab piece is no where to be found, ans everything in there, gears, everything looks in good shape, no free play and intact. So the kick start that skips must have been clutch related.
good

Nothing left to do but wait for parts

The clutch ended up being the wrong one lol :wallbash:
after getting fed up and tried selling it for over a week, my girlfriend just talked me into keeping it....

New clutch cable and friction discs, bike works perfectly.
next was time to fine tune it. Dropped a pilot jet size, went over the carb again to measure things. All is good. Runs pretty good now, just a slight miss when holding the throttle 1/2 or 3/4 cruising.
Plug came out a little on the darker side. Drained the gas and mixed s fresh batch at 40:1 with a new plug. We will see how today's ride goes. Bringing 1 smaller pilot jet with me. ( as j will lug the bike down Bush trails and such, leaner pilot won't hurt me)

But yea, big difference when fine tuning it. Bike picks right up and wants to walk out from under my 160lb ass every gear.

And I forgot how much of a pig on gas these things can be when rriding hard. Damn

2 smoke problems. You are correct, you can go much leaner on the pilot than most people think.

I went from 58 to 55. Just letting it idle and slowly warming up, then pulling the plug (e/ new 40:1 mixture) the plug is much more golden Brown. Things are looking up for the old girl.
I got a 52 incase it's needed.
