Lol... I have pirelli tires on the Camaro and I'm not impressed. They make nice dirtbike tires though lol.



Here is the shit end of the deal on this engine... There aren't any machine shops within 100 miles that I would let near an LS1 block, and I'd be better off throwing a hand grenade in each cylinder than letting them sleeve it. The seller actually had his LS2 block resleeved by a machine shop local to him that does a lot of LSX builds. He hasn't had any problems out of that LS2 and it runs 11.0's in a silverado N/A.

So I'm going to drive it back down to jacksonville and drop it off at the machine shop. I see it needs 2 liners. We will see what they say about the rest. He said they are expensive but good.

I'm going to pay for new bearings and rings, he is going to pay for the liners to be installed and to have the block cleaned and honed for assembly. It's actually cheaper for me to drive it down there and pick it up than it is to ship it.

fuck, i hate having to sleeve blocks even tho we do it all the time

The shop uses LA sleeves flanged direct fit sleeves. They are about the best dry sleeves on the market tied with Darton. I'm not super enthused either brother. I'm still researching some alternate avenues.

well, i probably own 10-15 blocks that are sleeved

and there is nothing wrong with them


but i still dont like it lol

I think I can find an aluminum 5.3L truck block for $200-$250 used. Those can be bored to 3.905. If I can get my hands on one I'd rather have the rotating assembly in a new block. Installing the main studs in the new block is going to double the machining costs. We'd be looking at probably $1500 with new rings and bearings, maybe a bit more. Sleeving 2 cylinders is going to cost $300 plus any extra for decking the head, then the disassemble/reassemble with new bearings and rings. That will probably run right at $850-$1000. I'm waiting on the machine shop to call me back with quotes.

Prepping and assembling my rotating assembly in a new block is $1150 labor

Sleeves are $150 per cyl x 2 so $300+2 ring sets and assembly labor


Worst case, with the cost of a block I'd be looking at about $2k for a new block, new bearings, and fresh rings. At that point it would be a completely fresh engine.

Best case, they can sleeve those 2 cylinders, deck the block a few thousandths, hone 2 cylinders and install 2 new ring sets then reassemble. That will probably run $800. If I drive it there and pick it up I'd want him to split the cost down the middle with me. Since the pistons are already out of the hole .0075" there isn't much room to deck the block after the sleeve install. .010" is max spec. If that would have to be exceeded the block is garbage. If the other cylinders need re-ringed and the bores are the slightest bit distorted they can't be honed any more and the block is garbage.

I'm perfectly fine with tossing another $1,000 and 2 9hr trips into this if it means I end up with a new, fresh engine. I got it so cheap I'd still be coming out ahead. I can't get the block to them until next friday at the earliest so it will be a little while. That's not a bad thing though. It will give me time to figure out which lifters I want to use and recoup some money.

I talked to Tony Mamo about cam/lifters/pushrods.

He is going to spec me a bigger cam on LXL lobes for better spring life. 236/244 ish 62x" lift on a 114LSA. That roughly doubles the overlap. His suggestion for lifters are the exact ones i'm looking at. They are Johnson slow leak rate link bar medium travel lifters with forced axle oiling. MSRP is $985, his price is $695. That about $100 more than Morel 5206's which were my other option. He thinks the forced axle oiling really helps reduce the failure rate and prolongs lifter life in a street car. It makes sense. 11/32" Manton double taper pushrods in custom lengths down to the thousandth based on my measurements are the last piece. $235 for those. After a comp cams trunion replacement kit for the stock rockers is in place that will be about as stable and strong of a top end you can build.
