Do you have dementia? I understand he does stuff he doesn't realize but you are the one that is driving off with the tailgate down. The simplest solution is to pay attention. You don't look at your tires as you walk up to your truck to make sure they aren't flat? Unless you are walking directly to the front of the truck and shimmy around to the driver door there isn't an angle that you wouldn't see the tailgate down. You should also be able to see it out of your rear view mirror.
