Most of the guys up in the far far north leave them running because the fuel is basically free and it gives them instant warm air and eliminates fuel gelling and hard cold starts. Idling is pretty much the worst thing you can do for a diesel.

Nah driving big rigs right now, but I'm going to start poking around for an apprenticeship as steamfitter/pipefitter/welder or similar soon.
Right now Im making between 400-600 a day working 20/10 so I dont mind but I want a trade, any fat redneck can drive a truck, I want something more.

Edit: Anyone any of these trades that can share some insight?

I'm doing the same thing over in Sask. Just started my first year, it's a good trade. Lot's of work right now if you don't mind being away from big city centers.

Free if you have your company paying for it haha. Otherwise it's still more expensive than most places in the US.

I know a lot of guys who run there Cummins atleast 16 hours a day, on engines with 400-500k + kiloms

Why is it if you don't mind me asking? I really don't know too much abour diesels.

Well I just went and read up on it and it makes perfect sense.

Low rpm idling is bad for the engines.
800-900 rpms is fine depending on the engine, keeps the engine at operating temp and prevents cylinder wash down (unburnt fuel traveling past piston rings causing damage).
I run my truck all night to keep the A/C going all summer and heat now that the temp is dropping.
