Its subjective. Some makes have thicker clear than others and it even varies between models. They make instruments that measure the clear coat thickness but that is pro level detailing. If you burn through the clear all you can do is keep it polished, sealed, and waxed until you can have it painted.
Sadly for me this particular year and model Honda and even the color is notorious for having insanely thin layers of both clear and basecoat, literally to the point that Honda has been repainting them under warranty due to clear coat failure and peeling etc. I might not keep the car long enough for it to get to that point anyway. I had originally gotten the car because it was fun and sporty to drive but also got good gas mileage which was a must at the time of purchase last year. Now that I live much closer to work I've been considering picking up a WRX. We'll see, thanks for the help though, when I get my stuff I'll take some pics and you can tell me if I'm doing it right. ;P
