It can, along with a laundry list of things. Another common one is the PCV starting to go. Easy way to check that is pull it out, give it a couple taps, and if you hear something loose inside that means its on its way out (if no CEL). Its a plastic piece thats attached to a hose on the top/back of your valve cover.

Of course, it's always a detective game diagnosing a car :P, you may have to spell out those acronyms as I may not know them. I'm sure you aren't doing it on purpose ^_^

I forget what PCV stands for but its a PCV Valve if that helps.
