Every state is different.  South carolina is 28% max on front two windows.  Rear windows can be blacked out. 

Regarding windshields, there is a small line on the top that you cannot go past with tint.  I am unsure but in almost all states tint on a windshield is a no no below i believe the 6 inch mark.

Regarding run ins with the law, the official way to check is with a tint meter, it slides in between the window and shows how much light is let in (the % tint it is). However, not every officer has one, but if you can clearly not see through it because it's blacked out, it's quite obvious.

Other interesting info:

Years and years ago (i was 18-19), i had my expedition completely blacked out.  5% all the way around and 25% on the windshield.  You could not see in at all.  It looked really good but nighttime was terrible. I literally had to get HID headlights because it was so dark.

And yeah I guess I do tend to draw some attention to myself (or it seems like I do anyway) when a cop is around. I have only been driving for 4 1/2 months now, and haven't got a ticket yet, but for some reason they make me so nervous that I start shaking lol! I can't afford to get a ticket  till after April, otherwise my insurance will go from 800$ every 6 months to like 1,300.


So sorry I seem like I'm being a bitch , and were it not for the cops in this town I wouldn't worry about it too much, but yeah...
