If I feel that my children are in danger..... the COMPLETELY RATIONAL thing to do is use lethal force on people who are trying to hurt them.

your example requires "someone trying to hurt them".

the bikers in this video didn't touch him or his family until he ran over people and drove off and even then they only gave him minor injuries and didn't touch the wife or child.
