Second the no push button. You'll be sad.

Just buy what you can get a deal on. 500CC is plenty for a new rider. You'll have a hard time using a 700+cc motor. Stick to liquid cooled in my opinion.

King Quad, Rancher, Brute Force (all though, they don't make a 500iirc) or Grizzly/Kodiak

I'm not a fan of belt drives on the kawasakis. If you get mud in the case it slips and then it's fucked.

This is true. Never had one before but we did run into that on our old old polaris 500 sportsmans we had on the farm.

The kawasaki Prairie is a junk wagon. The only other one that uses it is the Brute Force and the kfx700. I worked at a dealership when those first came out and they all came back in after being such kind in the mud 1 good time. Strong as fuck though. The Brute Force would stand it's big ass up on asphalt just from nailing the throttle in a neutral riding position.

I don't know if they improved the sealing of that design after 08 or not. The belt drive has to be vented somehow to functuon.

I'm sure they have.

The southern folks are constantly lifting these and dicking around in the mud

I looked into the honda rancher. I'm very interested. Haven't been able to find one for sale used around my area so I'm keeping an eye out. So just incase you got any other recommendations?
