Polished and re-gapped the points, basically re-assembled the entire armature place from step one....clipped the ends of the plug wires for fresh copper, added a tiny dab of dialectric, got it all hooked back up and it started...still will only start at half choke. needs a better cleaning of the carb and some adjustments but will plane my 10' dinghy at WOT quite easily and hit about 15mph according to GPS, found out the boat hasn't been inflated correctly (floor needs a higher PSI) and so I am hoping to try that later and see if it will plane out with 2 people in the boat, also adding trim tabs...going to seafoam it then replace the plugs with BR6S for a hotter spark...

Not sure if I will keep it or sell it, I have seen a few go for around $300-400 and that's a good profit for me

Man you are in the minority around here. You actually helped yourself?!? Awesome!

You'll find the tune up to be quite easy on the 2 stroke. There shouldn't be any motor oil though.

Yes true lol

Do I really need to check the gap on brand new plugs?

I don't have the tool for that

Yes. If they get dropped or bumped in shipping they could be off. A gap tool is a couple bucks.

Gap tool at oreillys is .99...they aren't 100% accurate because it is gradual but the difference in .30 and .31 is negligible

I got the shop manual today for mine, conveniently covers 1956 through 1974, and I have a '56 and a '72

Reading through it seems the information I have gotten regarding the setting of the low-speed needle was all over the place and it may just be backed out too far, so next time I have a chance I will reset it and try again

Hoping that with a few tweeks and the full inflation of the boat that it will easily plane with 2 people, although I also have trim tabs on the way (couldn't resist them for $26)

Got it running great, ran it the other day and put 2 gallons through it before running out of gas (oops)

Sold it today with the 1956 I picked up for $20 and got $400 for both

Total investment for both motors in parts and the cost of the motors was right around $230

Soooo came out ahead

Have a 1959 Johnson 10-horse with a 6-gallon pressurized tank I will be working on, and looking to put the money towards a valco with a 'Rude 9.9 with a 15hp carb on it (should be making something like 11-13hp without the 'tuned' exhaust)

Hoping to sell the 10hp for around $300-350 once its running, probably cost me at least $50 to make that happen but I got the motor in trade and the trade value (on my end) probably cost me about $50
