Why buy a WRX then dump abunch of money into it instead of just buying the STI in the first place? Makes no sense.

well if you're already gonna plan to mod it, why not get the cheapest version. Plus it doesn't seem like he did any big changes.

Because to bring it anywhere close to STI spec costs substantially more than modding it. There's more to it than a power bump.
