Hah, thanks guys. Yeah I am really enjoying working on this car.
That said, I agree, despite being an intoxicating drive, I too prefer my 240. The 300sl, despite being a robust 50's racer, is fragile in comparison. It doesn't like to be double clutched very hard, and you rarely downshift to slow, you almost always use the brakes alone. And the rear differential has a unique and effective locker systme that doesn't allow for breakaway under cornering, so entering and exiting a corner requires some finesse to get right. Otherwise it can be downright dangerous, oversteering like a mofo.
Back at it today.

(The man, the myth, the legend in the background.)

After some time, which personally made me feel good, Albrecht discovered the problem.
"Not enough fuel"
"THAT'S WHAT I SAID! YAY! I'M NOT A HACK!" (I was really excited I was correct)
The car was recently at Albrecht's shop, in Wisconsin, getting some work done, and he had tuned the car. Before it was sent to NY, the owner received video of it running flawlessly being loaded into the transport. Sweet!
When the owner received the car, it car ran, but barely....Not so sweet...This is what prompted them to ask me to take a look, in the meantime.
Something changed in transit, which is baffling.
Turns out, the fuel adjustment settings on the injection pump had shifted towards the lean side of the spectrum.
How though? Those are basically static settings, after initial setup...This is what threw us off.
Once we investigated the injection pump more thoroughly, we realized one of the enrichment adjustments was loose.
"Perhaps it vibrated loose in transit?" We thought.
Turned the injection pump enrichment "Two hours" - or about 10 degrees clockwise. BAM. Fixed. We are getting the fuel we need.
Idles beautifully. It's a totally different car.
So literally the problem was a 17mm bolt that needed to be like 1/16th of a turn clockwise from it's previous position. Wow.
Moral of the story. If you have a 300sl - get your fueling right.
It took most of the day to diagnose and fix the problem, despite being a fairly simple remedy.
So I didn't get to go for a ride today, but tomorrow, when we are fine tuning, I intend on following up with some more serious GoPro video. I'm super excited to drive it when it is
right.
I'm even happier with the knowledge I gained through this whole experience. Win win win. win.
Win.
