If you haven't rode before or are farely new to riding I would just get a 250 4 stroke.... After you have learned how to control the bike then you can upgrade from there. What style of riding you do will dictate your bike choice and setup as well ei.... moto or woods riding...

and what is the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke, which is better, etc"

Entirely different engines.

If you're going to learn how to work on them yourself, go 2 stroke. Very simple. Sound awesome. Amazing power band.

They're all pretty much the same, there isn't one that outright beats the other. My preference is yamaha. 2 stroke needs mixed gas and has a powerband at the top end for its peak performance. 2 stroke requires alot of maintenance and rebuilds. I prefer 4 stroke. Straight gas, power is there whenever you need it, low end, top end or whenever. Doesn't nearly require as much maintenance as a two stroke.

Only part of this that is really accurate is it needs mixed gas. Keep in mind a 2 stroke engine hasabout half the moving parts of a 4 stroke. You'd be surprised how quickly someone experienced can tear down and put back together a 2 stoke.

True..I'm biased. Good buddy of mine raced AMA (B class) for many years.

Only bad thing with a 2 stroke is the emissions. Some tree huggers don't like the stink.

I rode my yz450f for 5 years without one problem while my friends were rebuilding their 2 strokes every other year if not every other. You're right, it will cost more but it will all add up in the long run. Way more reliable. Dont have to worry about you're bike not starting every time you're out with your friends

If you blow up a 4 stroke it's totaled.

A top end job on a 4 stroke costs about the same as rebuilding a 2 stroke 3 times.

A properly maintained 2 stroke is actually more likely to start every time. Less moving parts, simplicity wins.

4 strokes make great torque and more peak power than their 2 stroke counterparts.

4 stroke power suits my riding style better and that is what i ride but to say a 4 stroke is more reliable or cheaper to run is just false.

Get a 250 4 stroke...

You need alot of experience to ring the neck of a 2 stroke and that powerband will be scary without ANY experience.

A 250 4 stroke will be way more predictable for you, you'll have power anywhere in the throttle.

What are you even looking to do with a dirt bike? Race, jumps, trails, pit??

Most of the brands are fine, i prefer yamahas or hondas but i've riden em all.. Pros/cons to each.

Chainsaw vs Fart can.... Go whatever way you want.
