STIs and competitors have had 300+ hp for a long time. GTIs will never be about high hp.

Honestly the new gti's are starting to hit some decent power numbers, but the R lines have always been the top, gti is the affordable sports version.

It's as pointless as every other overpowered fwd-based car like VW golf R, Audi S3, etc. Only difference is: this car is the best at being pointless. Best thing about it: it's pretty cheap costing 33000 euros (including taxes). In germany you get a base BMW 3series for that money (including a shitty 136 bhp engine).

One shouldn't underestimate that being fwd-only this car remains lightweight in comparison to the AWD cars, thus it was able to beat off its direct competitors.

Almost every "R" vw is Haldex AWD which is fwd based, but transfers power to the rear wheels via controller or loss of traction.

It's the gti's you're thinking of.

this type of AWD carries too much weight around, and as every Haldex-AWD, it loses to it's direct competitors in that class like seat leon cupra, opel opc or renault megane R.S. and ultimatly to the new Honda Civic Type R. Fun Fact: the cup version of the audi tt is being built at Seats Motor Sport, and is just FWD. The only fwd-based car that I can think of, that has a real performance AWD is the Mitsubishi Evo.

nope. but the old M3 for example is just so heavy. It's just a toy for those overweight posers, who cruise around town^^.
