i have always had a mixed opinion on this deal personally.
what i have always done, was drain it, replace the filter, strain the old fluid, mix 2:1 old to new fluid and replace it.
and then see how that goes, and then in 20-30k more miles, if it makes it there, do the same thing (minus filter) but 1:2 old to new. and if it keeps going after that, then i treat it like a normal tranny that has been serviced regularly
I've seen a lot of people do this and have great luck with GM and Ford auto's. I've tried it personally with a couple dodge and seen a few others try something similar with no luck. The only auto I resurrected from the dead was an old 44RE from a half ton dodge and it ended up getting new bands and a valve body about 40k after I started mixing fluid.
