So now that all of that is out of the way I'll address the scoring on Cyl 7. I couldn't see that bore until after it was on the stand and I could turn it over. I've emailed the seller about it. In my personal opinion that is too deep to be cleaned up with a hone. This block is already at 3.905" bore. Factory is 3.898" with a max overbore of .010". A .003" hone would max it out and I don't think that would clean this up. The block is scrap. It's a shame because the bearings looked perfect, the heads are perfect. Everything is perfect save that score. It may have detonated and fragged the top ring or blown a tip off of a spark plug. I don't have the experience necessary to diagnose the cause but I know the outcome. Hopefully we can work something out. I'd like to keep the heads. If he'd give me $2500 back I'll drive the short block back down to Jacksonville and drop it off with him. Or he can refund me enough to cover the machining costs of prepping a new block and I'll pick up the cost of the block. The guy was nice as could be and has a great reputation on Corvetteforum and LS1tech. I really doubt he knew that was there or he wouldn't have sold it. I'm sure we will work something out.

I continued on with the rest of the measurements so I could post something educational for once.

It's my watermark lol. The camera lens on my S4 is cracked. I'll be upgrading this summer.

It does but a new block is cheaper.

I thought the aluminum blocks were cast around the liners, wouldn't really be "replaceable" then. Although I guess for enough money anything is possible. I was talking about being able to press a new one in.

They have to be machined out. The LS1/6 gen 3 stuff is cast around the liners. Gen IV stuff is replaceable. To re-sleeve and ls1 or ls6 you have to install Darton MID wet sleeves or dry sleeves. That's how people built big engines before the big bore blocks came out. With the big MID sleeves you can go out to 454" on an ls1.

Good job on the write up bud!

Reminds me of how I used to do things before I acquired all of the fancy tools :)

I still measure cylinder heads the same way you just did though. Still can't justify spending all that money to do something so simple.

I'll be look forward to more!

Also, with a self built engine as long as you are confident in your skill I wouldn't question a .030 quench. I'd run it.

The seller is going to pay for machining another LS1 block or pay to have this one sleeved. I'm relieved he is so easy to work with.
