Don't keep it forever unless you are an electrical genius. For someone that drives as much as you a mid size car with a diesel or efficient turbo 4 cylinder is the way to go. Passat, Malibu, Accord, etc. Buy one that is a year or two old and you can get one with nice options, remaining warranty, and low mileage. You also won't take the big depreciation hit like you would on a brand new one.

400k miles here on my vw... not an electrical genius, and don't need to be.. the windows just suck at times lol.

Tdis have very little in the way of electrical parts anyway.

It varies from car to car as with anything. My brother in law's 1.8 Jetta has had an electrical poltergeist since it passed 50k miles. Interior lights turning themselves on and off, window switches working when they want to, the radio power goes in and out... All independent of one another. It hasn't had any electrical problems associated with the engine though.

I can say one thing I found with vw electrical gremlins is 90% of them are owner inflicted. Has he done and system work or anything? If not it could have been caused by the weather conditions in his area, moisture and vws don't get along at all lol

/e or just a lemon... damn lemons will fuck you for life :(
