BALANCE SHAFT SEAL!!
Do it with your timing chain and water pump, preferably soon.
I had an ex 99 f231a cg5
Great little car.
But, they don't have retainers on the balance shaft, so do that and replace it with the seal and retainer kit.
Also:
Try cleaning out your EGR and upper/lower plenum of the intake manifold. Should help out with the sputter a bit, and check the point on the ignition coil inside the distributor.
They often go out, hope this helps!
great advice but judging by the miles, more than likely it had its timing replaced once already. 394k Kilometers is about 244k miles and if it was oem parts then parts would of snapped by now. With that being said, I believe the retainer has been installed but its not a bad idea to re-service it.
I would check your Camshaft adjust solenoid or VTEC solenoid, they tend to get clogged and might need the gaskets on the base and on the solenoid to be replaced as well. The base gasket usually has a screen that gets dirty and clogged, should cost no more than $35 for both.
