Personally im a big fan of the XR650. I used to take mine up to the Badlands offroad park all the time and it was a great ride. Wasn't great coming off 30ft tabletops but it is a dual purpose so i didn't expect it to lol. Never had any issues busting down the highways cruising past people either.

This. A converted XR650R is a beast. Don't buy an L model. I had a KLR650. It will do the job but it is heavy and under powered. They also have some inherent mechanical and electrical issues.

check state laws before you try converting to street legal because some states won't allow it no matter how pristine a job you do simply because the title says "off road use only"

This.. I am a bigger guy and the 650 fits me perfect and has plenty of power and tons of aftermarket to do w/e you would like to it.

My buddys XR650 made right at 70hp to the tire with big cams, carb work, exhaust, and a tune. Talk about a fun bike..

In California specifically if you want a street legal XR650 I believe 2001 is the cutoff for them to be registered.

Plated ones hold their value extremely well because of this.
