Simply put- since you only want one set of tires but are concerned with snow you need to decide what's more important. An all seasonal performance tire which will work 98% of the time or something more snow specific which will help you the other 02%.

imo- Get performance tires with half-way decent snow reviews.

(see post #6) lol ;)

All season isn't really made for our type of winters. In Quebec, you aren't even allowed to have all season tires in the winter anymore. You will struggle a bit

He only wants one set of tires which means finding the happy medium. Do you have 4wd or switch your tires during the winter?

I have a 4wd and switch my tires in the winter. It's the law to have winter tires here in the winter

FWD without winter tires in Ottawa he will have trouble during the snow storms.

Ya for sure. I've done it before for 2 years on my first car (all seasons) on an 01 civic, and it seemed OK at the time.

Think I'm just gonna search kijiji for some winters and worry about summer tires later. I'm going to be back and forth from Toronto all winter so I'll just grab real winter tires

If your hell bent on sifting through pages of used winter tires all the power to you.
But half decent and good brand new sets are on sale everywhere this time of year!! They know people are looking and need them, busts do some shopping imo before you buy used you might be surprised
